On the technical side, the tools have been steadily increasing in capability. Schema management tools such as ERWin® and S-Designer® have gotten powerful enough to manage database components for large enterprises. Database management tools like Oracle® and DB2® are in the forefront of technical advances, with every new release containing impressive new features. Possibly the only thing that eclipses them are the application development tools now available, permitting development on a host of platforms at incredible speeds. With all these good, strong links in place on both the user and technical side, you’d think that things would be terrific, wouldn’t you? Experienced users building sound operations, skilled technicians wielding their tools – everything should come together, shouldn’t it? But we all know that it doesn’t. Projects run over budget, or miss their mark. Major corporations write off millions as elaborate implementations fail. Users are frustrated with technicians, technicians hate working with users, meetings drag on, deadlines are missed – we’ve all seen it. |

Since 1989, JCK has been devoted to teaching and implementing the principles of User-Focused Data Architecture. UFDA is based on the principle that the users are the data experts in any organization. Sound data architecture should focus on extracting the user's knowledge, clarifying ambiguous defintions, and building understandable data structures. These definitions and structures serve as the basis for system development. The first and most well known UFDA technique is Extended Relational Analysis ™ (ERA), which has been proven for decades. More recent techniques include Business Event Analysis & Modeling ™ (BEAM), which is useful for both Transactional Systems (BEAM TSS) and Decision Support Systems (BEAM DSS). |
